The Chattel House: Icon of Bajan Culture
The Elder's Last Word. The old man rose slowly, cleaning sand from his pants. He turned toward the little wooden home as though looking at an old friend.
" One day," he said, "people gon' forget what this house truly indicate. They gon' believe it was simply quite wood and intense paint. However you-- you compose the story now. Make certain they keep in mind.".
He paused, letting the sea-grape leaves rustle in the stillness.
" This house is we. All the moving, all the enduring, all the dreams we pack up and carry from one location to the next. When you understand that, you understand Barbados.".
And with that, he left-- slow, consistent, calm-- like a guy who brought his own house inside him.
This story becomes part of the much deeper cultural journey checked out in Rogues in Paradise and the RoguesCulture Identity Series.
